SPIRITUAL DIRECTION
The practice of Spiritual Direction has been part of Christianity for millennia, but has become more sought after and available in the last 20 years.
Fast paced lives require spiritual discipline if God is to be more than an afterthought.
The Spiritual Direction Program at the Center is designed to address today’s spiritual questions through the use of timeless spiritual practices. St. Augustine was a classic seeker after a mature faith. He sought to know himself so he could know God. He prays, “O eternal God, let me know myself. Let me know you. That is my prayer.” (Sol.2.1.1.)
Our deep desire to know God can be facilitated through establishing a relationships with a Spiritual Director. While counseling can help us understand ourselves, Spiritual Direction can help us understand God’s interactive presence in our lives. Spiritual Direction is a process of learning to recognize and respond to God, and of developing an intimate and conscious connection with the Holy One.
Through telling the story of your life to your director, you will begin to notice that your relationships with others and the events and circumstances of your life are a canvas on which God has been painting. Developing an awareness and appreciation of God’s previously unnoticed workings in our lives lies at the heart of the direction process. Whether your life has been easy or hard, the only requirement for beginning Spiritual Direction is a desire to follow God’s leading as you explore the intricate interweaving that has taken place between your life and the mysterious and wonderful Life of God.
Each of us is on a journey of faith, and our life stories connect us with our faith stories. Your Spiritual Director at the Center has been specially trained to listen for the voice of God in your experience, even when you can’t hear it yourself!
Two core assumptions of Spiritual Direction include recognizing that God is the true Director, and that God meets you where you are in a way that is respectful and individualized. Because each of our sacred journeys is unique, your Spiritual Director will not force you into prescribed behaviors. Rather, you will be encouraged to discover and embrace the immediacy and intimacy that are God’s nature.
The process of direction is not so much about learning things you didn't’t know as it is about being opened and exposed to the reality of God’s unseen but unmistakable Love. This love, if we care to search it out in the texture of our “ordinary” experience, will lead us down the path we long for...the path of knowing God and knowing ourselves.
