PARENTING
Unfortunately, kids don't come with an owners manual. Trial and error work OK for most things, but occasionally, issues arise which defy logic or any other readily accessible parenting tool. This is the time when a combination of parent education and family therapy may prove indispensable.
Any of the following sound familiar to you?
- "I don't understand why Johnny can't behave in school, his older brother and sister were model student but I've been to meet with the principal three times this year and they are threatening to kick him out if things don't change".
- "I just can't talk to my teenager anymore. He locks himself in his room, turns up the music, and will only come out to eat or go to the bathroom. Do you think he's using drugs or depressed or something?"
- "I feel like our college age daughter is taking advantage of us but what do I do? She won't work, is in her sixth year, is constantly asking for money, drops classes every semester, and her grades aren't even that good."
These and countless other scenarios point up the confusion and desperation that can be a part of any parent's experience. If you see signs of trouble, don't wait for things to get worse. Early intervention greatly increased the likelihood of success. For more information on signs of potential problems to look for in your children, click here.
